Iran wins first Golden Bear
The hot favourite has won the Golden Lion at the Berlin film festival. Iranian drama “Nader and Simin – A separation” by Asghar Farhadi reveals a marriage in crisis and the class struggle in Iran between middle class intellectuals and poorer Iranians for whom religion and honour is more important. It is the first Iranian winner of the prize. “The Berlinale is seen as the most political of the big film festivals. But there are two opinions about this movie’s politics. Some say its human approach avoiding politics is outstanding, while others say it’s soft on the Iranian authorities and that’s why it escaped censorship. One thing is for sure: interest in the film will now grow,” said euronews’ correspondent Sebastian Saam. The cast’s leading members, three men and two women, were also given the best actor and actress award collectively. Hungary’s Bela Tarr won the Silver Bear for his black and white “The Turin Horse”, which he says will be his last film. He gave no speech, which should surprise no-one as the movie has very little dialogue as it slowly examines the bleak lives of a farmer and his daughter on a lonely, windswept island, set to a relentless droning score that becomes a character in itself. It has sharply divided the critics.

Witness tells of violence in Benghazi
An eyewitness to the violence in Benghazi told euronews that authorities acted violently to put down the protests, and said there were worries about soldiers at the city’s airport. “We were attacked even though our demonstrations in Benghazi were calm. We have no intention of splitting the country, no plan to divide the Libyan people, from neither the left-wing nor the right-wing. Our unity is eternal. All the population of Benghazi are one people. Gaddafi’s son talks of sedition and division, but that’s wrong. We are brothers. He’s throwing Libyans into doubt by sowing this bad feeling. Our victory will come soon thank God, but we fear for our fellow Libyans at Benina airport who are sacrificing themselves for Libya’s freedom.”

Uganda’s President wins disputed poll
Uganda’s long-time President Yoweri Museveni has won a fourth term in office, extending his 25 years in charge. Official results show Museveni secured victory by a huge margin, just over 68 percent, compared to his rival Kizza Besigye who could only muster around a quarter of the total vote. The opposition, however, called the election a sham and claim massive sums of money had been used to buy votes and bribe polling agents. Besigye has threatened to call street protests. Although the vote passed peacefully, EU observers said an unnecessary military presence on voting day had created an uneasy, intimidatory feeling.

Hugo Chavez proposes peace plan for Libya
A peace plan for Libya, proposed by Venezuela’s President Chavez and reportedly accepted by Muammar Gaddafi, is being considered by the Arab League. The idea, outlined by Chavez earlier this week, involves sending representatives from several countries to Libya to help negotiate an end to the fighting. Chavez spoke personally to Colonel Muammar Gaddafi on Tuesday to outline his proposals. “Hopefully the politics of weapons will not be imposed on the people of Libya,” he told an audience in Venezuela. “I hope we can create a commission that goes to Libya to talk with the government and the opposition leaders, who are not known publicly.” Historically, the Venezuelan president and Colonel Gaddafi have been on cordial terms. Chavez visited Libya just five months ago. The Secretary General of the Arab League, Amr Moussa, told the Reuters news agency that he has been informed of the Chavez plan, but that it is still under consideration. Venezuelan officials have said that Gaddafi has accepted Chavez’s proposal.

Italy allows use of air bases
Italy is one a growing number of countries willing to take part in UN, EU and Nato backed military action against Libya. Its air bases, such as the one at Sigonella in Sicily, are likely to play a key role in implementing the resolution. On Thursday the UN voted to authorise a no-fly zone over Libya and to use “all necessary measures” to protect civilians from Colonel Gaddafi’s forces. Italy, which has close ties with its former colony , has already suspended a 2008 “friendship treaty” prohibiting its bases being used for military action against Libya. France, the country that led the calls for action, has confirmed that it will take an active part in military operations. Denmark and Norway have now joined the list which also includes the UK and the USA. A number of Arab countries are also expected to play a role. Do you agree with the UN resolution authorising military action in Libya? Libya summit threatens air strikes
The international community closed ranks against Colonel Gaddafi in Paris on Saturday. The USA, Europe and the Arab League joined hands in condemning his attacks on civilians, and promised to enforce the UN Security council’s resolution against Gaddafi. If he refuses to respect a ceasefire, his forces will be hit from the air. TO READ – Libya: a timeline of international diplomacy “There is still time for Colonel Gaddafi to avoid the worst by respecting without delay and without conditions all the demands of the international community. The diplomatic door will reopen as soon as hostilities cease. France has decided to play its part, and assume its role in history,” said host and French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

Egypt’s army sets time-frame for reform
Egypt’s army has said the country’s constitution will be amended in 10 days. The ruling military council – which assumed power last week after the fall of President Mubarak – said a committee of legal experts would draw up the reforms. The high command also declared it hoped to hand power to an elected civilian leadership within six months. The centre of Cairo is now devoid of protesters. The announcements are arguably the clearest indication yet the military is committed to a brief stay in power. But some believe racing to elections could hand an advantage to the Muslim Brotherhood, something the group denies. “We are not going to have a candidate for the upcoming presidential election. We can discuss the programmes of all the candidates when they appear and we can discuss their policies and will make our decisions at that time. And we are also not targeting the idea of having a majority in the next parliament,’‘ Essam el-Arian from the Muslim Brotherhood said. He added: We have the right to organise ourselves in a political party. Also, the millions of people, the young people, who took part in the revolution, and achieved this victory have the right to express themselves, and also have the right to organise themselves in a multi-party system, and they should do this.” The army command has also repeated its call for an end to nationwide strikes that are crippling the economy. Earlier, hundreds of tour guides gathered in Giza to urge tourists to come back despite the recent upheaval.

Libya
Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi seems to be losing his 41-year grip on power. Protests start in the eastern city, Benghazi, on February 17; there are reports of dozens of deaths as security forces – perhaps helped by foreign mercenaries – try to clear the streets of protesters. Demonstrations intensify and spread to the capital Tripoli , where government buildings are set ablaze. Gaddafi’s son makes a long, off-the-cuff statement on state television on February 20, warning of “rivers of blood” if the government’s offers of reforms were rejected. His speech goes largely ignored by protesters; the following day sees the worst single day of violence since the Arab unrest began. Rights groups claim more than 500 people have been killed so far in Libya. Gaddafi makes a short and bizarre statement, insisting he is still in Tripoli, while ambassadors and army officers begin to publicly turn their backs on the regime. Leaving Libya: Exodus of foreigners intensifies
The nightmare is over for more than 2,000 mainly Chinese workers, who have escaped Libya on board a Greek-flagged passenger ferry. It is just one of several vessels chartered by Beijing to bring its expats to safety. The evacuees have been arriving in the port town of Heraklion on the island of Crete. “The Heraklion Port authority, the authority which I am representing, will do everything in our power to put ourselves in the place of these people and treat them with respect and kindness,” said Ioannis Bras, Managing Director of the Heraklion Port Authority. Bad weather conditions delayed the arrival in Malta of the UK warship HMS Cumberland, evacuating Britons and other foreigners from Benghazi. Some had been touched personally by the turmoil gripping Libya. “I have friends who are standing around in the streets and mercenaries would come around with plateless cars. And I had a group of friends, three of them, they got shot down. They got killed,” said Libyan/UK citizen Ahmed Neihoum. Britain’s government is stepping up its response to the crisis, amid claims that it has been slow to organise evacuations from Libya.
